Oxford city football club to accept Bitcoin payments

Bitcoin

Oxford City Football Club plans to charge ticket, food and drink prices in Bitcoin on match days. Oxford City will be accepting cryptocurrency as an alternative to bank cards and cash during matches held at their 'Raw Charging Stadium'.

According to the BBC, the club will accept Bitcoin as a transaction in the first match of the National League South against Eastbourne Borough FC on Saturday. Club director hopes bitcoin payments will become normal in UK club football.

According to the BBC, the club has entered into a multi year contract with Isle of Man based company 'Coincorner' to process bitcoin transactions. Company name will also be on the back of the club jersey as a sponsor. Coincorner has launched 'The Bolt Card' to facilitate Bitcoin transactions. Coincorner claims the card is the world's first 'contactless card' for Bitcoin.

Oxford City Director of Football Justin Merritt said, "Embracing new technology and innovation is an important part of the club's long term plan to ensure Oxford City FC can continue to operate as a self sustaining club." “It is not compulsory for people to engage with new technologies. But we think, over time payment in Bitcoin will become the normal in English football.”

Commenting on the new deal with Oxford City, CoinCorner CEO Daniel Scott said, "Innovation and forward thinking are at the heart of our professional operations as Oxford City FC."

“It's great to see a club being the first in the national league to accept transactions in Bitcoin. We think this will establish digital currency as normal for football fans across the UK, both outside the league and across the Football League Division.”
