Power Generation from Railway Track

Recently the German Railways and the British Energy Company are conducting joint tests by installing solar panels on the railway lines. Thus 0.01 megawatt electricity can be generated from every kilometer of railway line.

Germany has a total of 66,000 kilometers of two way railways. It can change the concept of electricity production in the world! And the experiments going on with eco friendly electrifying rails instead of diesel powered rail engines may also be successful.

Before this, a new solar powered project was undertaken by Climate Action and Imperial College in a joint venture. They launched the world's first solar powered rail line in Hampshire, UK in 2020. There, 100 solar panels power the Wessex route's light and signal system. Entrepreneurs hope this will pave the way for solar powered trains in the future.

100 solar panels from a solar farm in Aldershot, Hampshire, UK provide 30 KW of electricity to a railway line. This is the first railway line in the world to be equipped with solar power for signaling and lighting.
